{"id":13438,"date":"2023-01-04T12:11:33","date_gmt":"2023-01-04T12:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/moneyexchange.es\/blog\/how-to-apply-for-spanish-nationality-for-your-children\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T01:37:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T01:37:56","slug":"how-to-apply-for-spanish-nationality-for-your-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moneyexchange.es\/en\/blog\/how-to-apply-for-spanish-nationality-for-your-children\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Apply for Spanish Citizenship for Your Children"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"13438\" class=\"elementor elementor-13438 elementor-9594\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7ff589dd e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"7ff589dd\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46f1555f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46f1555f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Whether you\u2019ve had to move to Spain and leave your children behind or you\u2019ve moved here with young children, it\u2019s important that you understand all the requirements for regularizing your status and that of your children, or that you know how to obtain residency through family reunification.<\/span><\/p><h2><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Do you want to obtain Spanish citizenship for your children?<\/strong>  It is possible, but it requires specific tests and criteria to be met.  <\/span><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">To begin with, there are three important points or requirements you should keep in mind before applying for Spanish citizenship for your children, which you must meet:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Have been a resident of Spain for a period of at least two years.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">You must provide documentation proving the Spanish nationality and residency of each parent.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">You must meet certain requirements for Spanish citizenship in order for your application to be approved.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">By keeping these facts in mind, you can make the process of applying for Spanish citizenship for your children much easier.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">You should also keep in mind that if your children were born in Spain, the process is much simpler. The relevant provisions are set forth in Article 17 of the Spanish Civil Code: <\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Both parents must be Spanish, or at least one of them must be.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">If neither parent is Spanish, it is sufficient for one of them or one of their ancestors to have been born in Spain.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var(--wpex-text-2);\">Children born in the country whose parents are unknown.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px; color: var(--wpex-text-2);\">In the event that the child is adopted by Spanish citizens.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">A child born in Spain whose parents are foreign nationals who do not hold any nationality (stateless persons)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9603\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyexchange.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Reagrupacion-ninos.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1048\" height=\"250\"><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">If you don\u2019t meet either of the two conditions mentioned above, don\u2019t worry. There are other ways to acquire Spanish citizenship, such as through <strong> \u201coption\u201d<\/strong> in certain special cases. This means you can choose to acquire Spanish citizenship even if you don\u2019t meet the usual requirements, such as having a Spanish parent or being born in Spain. To apply for Spanish citizenship by option, you must meet the following requirements:   <\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Be at least 18 years old.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Have been a legal resident of Spain for at least one year.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not be subject to any of the prohibitions on acquiring Spanish citizenship, such as having a final conviction for a serious crime or being in a state of financial insolvency.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not have been convicted of a crime against national security or a serious crime in another country.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not have been convicted of a drug offense or drug trafficking in another country.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not be subject to deportation or a ban on entry into Spain.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not be subject to security measures or judicial supervision.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not be in pretrial detention.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not be facing forced eviction.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Not be in a situation of economic vulnerability.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Last but not least, you must keep in mind that the sponsor must have sufficient financial resources to provide for the needs of the family members being sponsored. To this end, income contributed by a spouse, partner, or other first-degree relative in the direct line of descent who resides in Spain and lives with the sponsor may be taken into account. Income received from the social welfare system will not be counted. You will typically be asked to submit your last six pay stubs to verify this information.   <\/span><\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9607 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/moneyexchange.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Reagrupacion-viaje.png\" alt=\"Travel Reunification\" width=\"1048\" height=\"250\"><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The government must respond within 45 days of the application being filed. If it fails to do so, the application will be deemed denied by administrative silence. If the application is approved, the family member must apply for a visa within two months. The visa can be applied for at the Spanish consulate where the family member resides.   <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Once the visa has been granted, the family member has until the visa expires\u2014but no later than three months\u2014to arrive in Spain. Once in Spain, they must apply for a Foreigner\u2019s Identity Card within one month. This Foreigner\u2019s Identity Card can be obtained at a police station or at the Immigration Office.  <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">As you&#8217;ve seen, there are numerous procedures and requirements, and the deadlines are very tight.
